Leggett & Platt follows a model of sustainable development, which strives to preserve the environment while also building up communities through employment and local patronage. We have made great strides during the past few years in educating our workforce energy-saving innovation and putting management systems in place that further the cause of good stewardship of the earth.
Leggett & Platt works had to reduce the amount of materials take to landfills. We use over 1 million tons of recycled scrap each year to produce our steel and several hundred million pounds of recycled urethane foam for our bonded carpet pad. Our corrugated packaging products are made from 80% recycled materials, our IRT office furniture solutions are made from 100% recycled plastic, and our offices are heavily involved in an internal recycling and conservation program.
Additionally, Leggett & Platt has found a way to reuse wastes created from production processes. Each year, over 2 million gallons of used sulfuric acid from Leggett & Platt operations are repurposed for wastewater treatment or converted into fertilizer products. And the reduction of lubricant needs by our drawn wire operations has cut annual landfill deposits by over one-half million pounds. Those are just a few of the many ways that Leggett & Platt is working to preserve the environment.
